Learning Goals, Learning Outcomes, Learning Objectives: A Micro Lesson

May 18, 2023 by Richard

This micro-lesson will uncover the distinctions between learning goals, objectives, and outcomes. Although often used interchangeably, it’s important to recognize that these are distinct terms with separate meanings.

Learning Goal

A learning goal is a general statement that describes the competency (e.g., the knowledge, skills, and abilities) the learner needs to perform after they complete your course successfully.

Learning Objective

Learning objectives describe what you want your learner to be able to do after completing your course. Think of these as specific, measurable competencies in which you would assess the learner to decide whether your learning goal was met.

Learning Outcome

The learning outcome describes what you want the learner to have achieved and can demonstrate at the end of your course. This becomes your evidence that learning actually took place.

Example: Changing a Flat Tire

Learning goal: To equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to safely and effectively change a flat tire.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the tools and equipment required to change a flat tire
  • Describe the step-by-step process of safely changing a flat tire
  • Demonstrate proper lifting and jacking techniques when removing and replacing a flat tire
  • Locate and interpret the recommended tire pressure information on the sidewall of a tire
  • Use a lug wrench to loosen and tighten lug nuts

Learning outcome: Upon completing the training on changing a flat tire, learners can confidently and independently change a flat tire on a vehicle. They will accurately identify the necessary tools, follow the step-by-step process, utilize proper lifting and jacking techniques, interpret tire pressure information, and effectively use a lug wrench to complete the task safely and efficiently.
