TITLE: HIRAGANA CHALLENGE

PROJECT BACKGROUND

I completed this project for a local middle school that encouraged its students to learn as thoughtful, compassionate world citizens through an international lens. My goal was to provide an engaging way for the students to study hiragana.

  • Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development
  • Target Audience: Middle school students
  • Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop
  • Budget: Low (Donated)

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The opportunity to create the Hiragana Challenge project came through my daughter studying Japanese, wanting a fun and engaging way to study the characters in preparation for an upcoming exam. I donated the final product to her middle school. The word hiragana means “ordinary syllabic script.”

MY DESIGN APPROACH

The original idea for the design was to use a flash-card approach. The learner selects a card, determines its meaning, and then flips the card to see the answer. After creating a few mock-ups for this design, I wasn’t happy and decided to take a different approach, using a card game design/feel and tracking the user’s progress.

There are ten questions, each worth 10 points for 100.
