TITLE: TYPE 2 DIABETES MANAGEMENT COURSE SERIES
PROJECT BACKGROUND
This international project ran over several months and included (10) 20-minute courses developed in Storyline 2:
- The Challenge of Type 2 Diabetes
- Evaluating for the Presence of Type 2 Diabetes
- Steps to Prevent or Delay Diabetes
- Taking a Patient-Centered Approach to the Management of Type 2 Diabetes
- Preparing a Diabetes Management Plan
- Essential Components of Self-Management Education
- Monitoring for Glycemic Control
- Vaccinate for Pneumonia and Influenza
- Pharmacologic Management
- Insulin Therapy
The courses supported a standard, 4-step patient-assessment process for diagnosing diabetes earlier and formulating a plan to manage the disease:
Evaluate > Educate > Treat > Follow-Up & Manage
The courses were designed to help the learner methodically approach the assessment of patients who may be at risk for Type 2 Diabetes to diagnose them earlier, help them to assist their patient in taking the necessary steps to prevent or delay the onset of the disease; then, to work with their patient to manage and keep the disease under control using a patient-centered approach.

OUR DESIGN APPROACH
When the client initially approached us to build this course, we recognized the amount of material to be covered would not fit into a single 1-hour course. After discussing the project with the client, we outlined a new project plan to break the content into multiple courses. By approaching the project in this manner, it allowed the learner to be able to complete one or more of the segments in a single setting.
We worked closely with the client and their subject matter experts to identify the business objectives for the series and the learning objectives for each course. Since this was also an international-based course, we worked extensively with the client to identify and address culturally sensitive issues in the areas of language/text, design and layout, graphics/image selection, and gender roles.
A pretest and a post-test were integrated into each course to ensure the learner absorbed the information. The client wanted the learners to pass the post-test with a grade of 75% or more to register the course as completed in the LMS.
KNOWLEDGE CHECKS
Aligned with the learning objectives, knowledge checks were introduced throughout each course to ensure the learner focused on the most critical objectives. They were also designed to prepare the learner for the post-test assessment at the end of the course. Knowledge checks were designed using the following formats: True/False, Drag and Drop, Multiple Choice, Single Answer, Multiple Answer.
INTERACTIONS
A variety of interactions were used to better engage the learners and keep their attention. When possible, the interactions were tied closely to real-world situations to allow the learner a chance to assess their understanding of the topic covered. The following types of interactions were used to reinforce critical thinking: Scenarios, Case Studies, Drag and Drop, Matching, Click and Reveal, Videos, Single Answer, Multiple Answer, True/False
All courses were packaged as SCORM, uploaded, and tested in a Learning Management System (LMS) that we set up and administered. We also created end-of-course evaluations and course completion certificates which were customized to each learner. The results of these evaluations were used to review and make modifications to the courses based on information received from the learners.
We also wrote scripts for female and male voice-over talent and managed the recording of the scripts.
